Introducing ...

Lorie Hutchison!

What can we say about her?

We'll say a lot as this blog gets going.

Suffice it to say, this woman has put a lot into training for one of the toughest foot races on the planet. She will run/jog/walk/crawl 135 miles through Death Valley July 14, into the 15th and possibly on into the 16th, in search of her first Badwater finish.

Check in for more on Lorie's incredible adventure!

Hey all!
This is my first blog ever! If I am going to blog I guess that I had better have an opinion about something and I had better know how to spell it correctly.
The great adventure is finally beginning, it has been a long time coming. I bet you are all ready for it to start and ready have me stop talking about it.
We have a very chic mini van, so far Margaret is the only who has been allowed to drive it. As soon as she found out the van driver has the control of ALL of the power doors and locks she has been all over it.
We have a little mascot, buddha, who just sit in his seat and smiles. We have to find a way to take his picture and put it up on this site. He is an inspiration to us all. I will be rubbing his belly often and thinking about his contagious smile while I am on the run.
Nancy has been our host in St. George she was waiting in her condo for us when we arrived with a beer in her hand. (her first one?). Margaret and I went out and enjoyed the heat for a while then we all went to the pool then off to mexican food then we proceeded to party like forty year olds until 9pm.
We will check back again tonight!
Be cool,
Lorie

And just so you know...if you survive this run and are still going to do the Wasatch 100. I'm totally training to be a pacer...you thought I wouldn't be able to! I'm even doing a triathalon the end of September so I've been doing my training! The wasatch 100 will be a good warm up for my triathlon. Anyway, I think you are totally a bad ass and I love ya to death!

We left Las Vegas this morning and drove out to Death Valley National Park to take in the sights, see the course, and experience the heat. We accomplished all. Zabriske Point was a beautiful and impressively unique sight to see. The course is a long, undulating highway stretching from one end of DV to the other….a little like Brigham City to Provo, only desert, desolate and HOT. 111F actually and today was overcast. We had some lunch at Furnace Creek, a tiny little place tucked into the only grove of trees in the entire valley, and headed back to Pahrump to hang out for the evening. Lorie is busying herself by putting the final touches (for the 5th time) on her gear, supplements, supplies, and making little notes for herself and her crew. She’s a really good note-maker. Maybe I will get her to write one for you all prior to the big race. More later…

Some of you have asked about the crew that Lorie recruited to help her accompany her on this little fun run tomorrow. Jodi Derouchey is a long-time friend (and hopefully future friend after this is over) from SLC, Margaret Rose (I'm in for the long haul with Lorie), friends Drew and Andrea Harrell from Albuquerque (doctor and nurse; whew!), and Steve Speckman, another long-time buddy with a great camera and sense of humor, which I'm pretty sure we'll need. We're anxious to get to the race meeting today and get our crew organized tonight. Lorie just returned with coffee so gotta go! Priorities!

Good morning,

I have awakened from an Ambien-induced sleep ready to go! I have to temper my enthusiasm today, I don’t want to use it up I might need it over the next 3 days. We took a trip to Furnace Creek yesterday and I spied some of my fellow runners. Wow they look fast, tough and strong. I am nervous about going to the runners meeting today, they are all going to see me, the imposter from Utah. Well I got a number fair and square so they are going to have to let me try. If nothing else I am pretty sure that my crew can beat up any of the other crews.
Margaret and Jodi have been awesome traveling companions! They always want to do what I want to do so it has worked out very well for all of us. Right now I am pretty sure that they want to go to breakfast so I am signing off with an empty stomach and sweaty palms.

Be cool,
Lorie

Hey Lorie,
Don and I know that you are NOT an imposter. We have been in a lot of tough situations with you, and you scare us to death because you are so tough, and so stubborn. Yes, I said stubborn, which is perfect for this race. You have the best crew, and the best attitude. YOU GO GIRL!!! We are with you.

Only 10 minutes until Lorie starts running. I can't stop thinking about the entire team. GOOD LUCK!

Hey Lore,

I am sending you my coldest thoughts and touching you with my cold hands and feet. Visualize the goose bumps . . .

So, I am sitting here, at the hangar, by the yellow-taped crime scene. Seems someone has stolen Buddha. There is even an outline of his body on the wall. Any chance that he is traveling - voluntarily - with you? Don't worry; your secret is safe with me.

Wishing you good Karma!

P.S. Will you get another belt buckle for this race? Why is it always belt buckles?

Oops - the above comment was posted by Rose, who clearly doesn't know what she is doing!

Lorie - I just checked into the race and you are taking the freaking place to the bank! One foot in front of the other, NEVER STOP! I'll check back soon. Keep it up!

7th place and looking strong! I think Buddha has a place in Lorie's ultramarathon race world. Nirvana is just a few miles ahead!
